Migraine IV — Prescription-Strength Relief at Your Door
You’ve already tried ibuprofen. Excedrin. Lying in a dark room. Nothing’s touching it. Here’s what can: Toradol — a prescription-strength anti-inflammatory that’s stronger than anything over the counter. Magnesium — which relaxes the blood vessel constriction driving your pain. Zofran — to stop the nausea that makes everything worse. And a full liter of fluids — because dehydration is one of the most common migraine triggers, and you probably haven’t been drinking enough water with your head pounding.
All delivered via IV, so it starts working in minutes. Not hours. Minutes.

Why This Works When Pills Don’t
Toradol is not ibuprofen
Ketorolac (Toradol) is a prescription-strength NSAID that’s 5–10x more potent than over-the-counter ibuprofen. It targets the inflammatory cascade driving your migraine pain at a level OTC medications can’t reach. Delivered via IV, it reaches peak blood concentration in minutes instead of the 30–60 minutes oral medications require.
Magnesium addresses the vascular component
Migraines often involve abnormal blood vessel constriction and dilation in the brain. Magnesium relaxes smooth muscle in blood vessel walls, helps regulate neurotransmitter release, and blocks excessive calcium ion flow that contributes to cortical spreading depression — the neurological event underlying many migraines. Studies show migraine sufferers frequently have lower magnesium levels than non-sufferers.
Zofran stops the nausea spiral
Migraine nausea isn’t just uncomfortable — it prevents you from keeping down oral medications and fluids. Zofran blocks the serotonin receptors in your gut and brain that trigger nausea and vomiting. When the nausea stops, your body can start recovering.
Dehydration is both a trigger and an amplifier
Dehydration triggers migraines and makes active migraines worse. But when you’re in pain and nauseous, the last thing you want to do is drink a liter of water. IV fluids solve this — a full liter absorbed in 30–45 minutes without involving your stomach.
What to Expect
When to call:
As soon as you feel a migraine coming on, or when OTC medications haven’t worked after 1–2 hours. The earlier we treat, the faster the resolution. Don’t wait until hour 8.
During treatment:
Your nurse dims the lights, keeps conversation minimal, and works quietly. The Toradol and Zofran start working within 10–15 minutes of entering your bloodstream. Many patients report significant pain reduction before the IV bag is finished.
After treatment:
Most patients feel substantial relief within 30–60 minutes of starting the IV. Some experience complete resolution. Others have significant reduction that allows them to function. The magnesium continues supporting vascular relaxation over the following hours.
For Chronic Migraine Sufferers
If you get migraines regularly, consider preventive IV therapy. Monthly magnesium-focused IVs (a Myers Cocktail or Mega Myers) during non-migraine periods can help reduce frequency and severity over time. Magnesium maintenance is one of the most evidence-supported nutritional strategies for migraine prevention. Talk to your nurse about a preventive protocol.

FAQ's
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Toradol safe?
Yes, for most patients when administered by licensed professionals. Toradol (ketorolac) is a prescription NSAID used routinely in emergency departments and surgical settings. It’s not appropriate for patients with kidney disease, active GI bleeding, or certain other conditions. Your NP screens for contraindications before approving treatment.
Can I take my regular migraine medication with this IV?
Tell your nurse and NP what medications you’ve already taken today, including triptans (Imitrex, Maxalt), OTC painkillers, and any preventive medications. Your NP determines whether the Migraine IV is safe to combine with what you’ve already taken.
What if my migraine doesn’t respond to the IV?
Most patients experience significant improvement. If symptoms persist or worsen after treatment, or if you experience neurological symptoms (vision changes, weakness, confusion, worst headache of your life), seek emergency medical care. These could indicate a condition requiring immediate evaluation beyond IV therapy.
Do you accept insurance?
IV therapy is not covered by insurance. We accept HSA/FSA cards, cash, and all major credit cards. $225 covers everything.
