Biotin IV Therapy — The Keratin Vitamin

(and What the Supplement Industry Won’t Tell You)

Type “biotin” into any search engine and you’ll be buried in supplement ads promising thicker hair, stronger nails, and glowing skin. Biotin gummies are a billion-dollar market. But here’s what the supplement industry doesn’t emphasize: most of the dramatic results people attribute to biotin come from correcting a deficiency. If you’re not deficient, the evidence for biotin producing dramatic cosmetic changes is much more modest.

That’s the honest answer. And being honest about it is more useful to you than another ad.

Here’s what we do know: biotin is genuinely important for keratin production, and there are specific groups of people who are more likely to be deficient — and for whom biotin supplementation can be genuinely transformative.

What Biotin Does

Biotin (vitamin B7) is a coenzyme for five carboxylase enzymes in your body. These enzymes are involved in:

  • Keratin production. Keratin is the structural protein in your hair, nails, and the outer layer of your skin. Biotin supports keratin infrastructure — the protein scaffolding that determines hair thickness, nail hardness, and skin barrier integrity. When biotin is deficient, keratin production falters: hair thins, nails become brittle and ridged, and skin becomes dry and flaky.
  • Fatty acid synthesis. Your skin’s moisture barrier depends on lipids (fats) produced in the epidermis. Biotin is a cofactor for acetyl-CoA carboxylase, the enzyme that initiates fatty acid synthesis. Without it, your skin’s lipid barrier weakens, leading to dryness and increased sensitivity.
  • Energy metabolism. Like other B vitamins, biotin participates in converting macronutrients into cellular energy. It’s specifically involved in gluconeogenesis (producing glucose from non-carbohydrate sources) and amino acid metabolism.

Who Actually Benefits From Biotin

This is where the honest conversation matters:

  • People with biotin deficiency

True deficiency causes dramatic hair loss, brittle nails, and a characteristic facial rash (periorificial dermatitis). Supplementation in deficient patients produces dramatic improvement. But true deficiency is uncommon in the general population because biotin is widely available in foods and gut bacteria produce some as well.

  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women

Up to one-third of pregnant women may develop subclinical biotin deficiency because the fetus draws heavily on maternal biotin stores. This is one of the most evidence-supported groups for biotin supplementation.

  • People on certain medications

Anticonvulsants (carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital) and long-term antibiotics can deplete biotin. Anticonvulsants accelerate biotin metabolism; antibiotics kill the gut bacteria that produce biotin.

  • Heavy alcohol users

Alcohol impairs biotin absorption and increases excretion.

  • People with biotinidase deficiency.

A genetic condition that impairs biotin recycling. Affects approximately 1 in 60,000 people.

  • People eating large amounts of raw egg whites.

Raw egg whites contain avidin, a protein that binds biotin and prevents absorption. This is rare in normal diets but worth mentioning because it shows up in fitness culture.

The Realistic Expectations Section

  • If you’re biotin-deficient: Expect significant improvement in hair thickness, nail strength, and skin quality. Results typically visible within 3–6 months with consistent supplementation.
  • If you’re NOT biotin-deficient: Additional biotin may provide mild, gradual improvement in hair and nail quality, but the dramatic transformations you see in ads are unlikely. Your body uses what it needs and excretes the rest (biotin is water-soluble).

We include biotin in our beauty-focused packages because it’s one component of a comprehensive approach to skin, hair, and nail health. Combined with glutathione (collagen protection), vitamin C (collagen production), and hydration, biotin contributes to a formula that addresses beauty from multiple angles — not just one vitamin in isolation.

Why IV Biotin

Oral biotin supplements are widely available and generally well-absorbed. The advantage of IV biotin is:

  • Guaranteed absorption. No variability from gut health, medications, or food interactions.
  • Combined delivery. IV biotin is delivered alongside the other beauty-supporting ingredients (glutathione, vitamin C, hydration) in a single session, ensuring they all reach therapeutic levels simultaneously.

Convenience. For patients who are already getting an IV for other reasons, adding biotin provides beauty support without adding another daily pill to the routine.

Important Lab Test Warning

Biotin can interfere with blood test results. This is important and often overlooked. High-dose biotin supplementation can cause falsely high or falsely low results on certain lab tests, including thyroid function tests, troponin (heart attack marker), and hormone panels. The FDA issued a safety communication about this in 2017.

If you’re scheduled for blood work, inform your doctor that you’re taking biotin supplements or receiving IV biotin. Most labs recommend stopping biotin at least 72 hours before blood draws to avoid interference. Our NP can advise you on timing if you have upcoming lab work.

FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will biotin make my hair grow faster?

Biotin supports the keratin infrastructure that hair is built from. If you’re deficient, supplementation can significantly improve hair growth and thickness. If you’re not deficient, the effect is more subtle. Biotin won’t change your genetics or reverse pattern baldness, but it can optimize the raw materials available for hair production.

  • How long until I see results?

Hair grows approximately half an inch per month. Even with optimized biotin levels, visible hair changes take 3–6 months. Nail improvement may be noticeable sooner (6–8 weeks) because nails grow faster than hair.

  • Is biotin safe to take every day?Title

Yes. Biotin has no established upper intake level (UL) because no toxic effects have been documented even at very high doses. The main concern is lab test interference (see above), not toxicity.
